HCHC to Host Free Autumn Food Distributions in Albany, Hudson, and Catskill on October 9
September 25, 2026 — Albany, Hudson and Catskill, NY — As New York communities prepare for a major shift in how the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is administered, the Hudson Catskill Housing Coalition (HCHC) will host free autumn food distributions in Albany, Hudson, and Catskill on Friday, October 9.
Beginning October 1, the federal government’s share of SNAP administrative costs will drop from 50% to 25%, shifting additional costs onto state and local governments. The New York State Association of Counties estimates the change will add approximately $168 million annually to costs borne by New York counties and New York City.
The change does not directly reduce individual SNAP benefits, but it comes as local governments take on additional costs to administer a program that nearly 3 million New Yorkers rely on for food assistance.
For HCHC, the October 9 distributions are part of an ongoing commitment to making food accessible directly in the communities where people live.
“Food access is connected to everything else people are dealing with, especially the cost of housing and the rising cost of everyday necessities,” said Shirle Cross, Co-Founder and Board Chair of HCHC. “We want people to know that there are resources right here in their communities, and we want to make it easier for people to get the food they need.”
Since January 2026, HCHC and its community partners have distributed more than 41,000 pounds of food, providing the equivalent of nearly 77,000 meals through distributions serving Albany, Hudson, and Catskill.
